Medical student replaces Lara Bingle as Miss Tourism Australia

Melbourne, Dec 8: A 23-year-old medical student from New South Wales has replaced Lara Bingle as the new face of Australian tourism.

Myffy Scadden has been crowned the winner of the inaugural Miss Tourism Australia pageant in Melbourne.

Scadden was one of 18 finalists in the event, which has been criticised as an inappropriate way to market Australia.

She will go on to represent the country at the international final in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 31.

While Lara Bingle, who appeared in a bikini in Tourism Australia's controversial "Where the bloody hell are you?" advertisements in 2006, is a fashion model, Scadden has a Bachelor of Medical Science degree from Sydney University and is now studying a Bachelor of Medicine Surgery.

She also began teaching dance to children aged three to 17 five years ago.

"My ambition for the future is to complete my medicine degree and graduate as a doctor so I can use my skills and qualifications to help others,'' the Herald Sun quoted Scadden as saying.

"I feel that participating in the Miss Tourism Australia competition I would be able to further my ability to help people less fortunate than myself, but also provide me with an outlet to act as a role model for girls and young women all over the world," she added.

She will also appear at international trade fairs and speak on youth issues.
