UN is about to recognise Taliban as political party: Pak politician

Peshawar, June 15(ANI): The United Nations is about to remove the Afghan Taliban from its list of terrorist organisations and recognise it as a political force, Akram Khan Durrani, Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, has said.

Opening the budget debate in the assembly, the Opposition Leader said the UN had already opened doors for negotiations with the group.

"I am telling you on the floor of the House that the UN will very soon declare the Taliban movement a political party," the Dawn quoted Durrani, as saying.

Durrani, a close associate of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, said that Afghan President Hamid Karzai had discussed the matter during his visit to Islamabad last week and sought Pakistan's cooperation in this regard.

He said that major developments were taking place in the region, and that the United States was planning to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan before 2014.

Durrani also urged the government to stop using force and resume talks with the 'forces of resistance' in the province and tribal areas to end the ongoing bloodshed.

"If Karzai and America can negotiate with the Taliban, why cannot our government talk with the local (militant) groups?" he questioned.
