Fish transaction volume returns to pre-quake level at Tokyo wholesale market

Tokyo, April 19(ANI): The volume of fish transactions at the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market has returned to the same levels as before the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, indicating a recovery in the consumer demand, according to market officials.

The fish transaction volume had plunged to 448 tons in the March 18-24 period after the natural disaster devastated the fisheries industry in one of Japan's major fishery bases and also disrupted the country's logistics network.

Market officials said that the fish transaction volume came to 746 tons in the week through last Thursday, outpacing the 741 tons in the week of March 4-10, Kyodo News reports.
