Exercise 'cannot undo heavy drinking damage'
From ANILondon, Nov 26: Exercise cannot cure the damage that heavy drinking may cause, says UK's health care system.
A survey for NHS' Know Your Limits campaign has revealed that almost one in five people in England exercise to 'make up' for a heavy bout of drinking.
And one in five people drink more than double the NHS recommended amounts per day, the poll found.
The YouGov survey of 2,421 adults for the campaign found nearly 60 percent of drinkers in England exercise regularly.
This is a higher proportion of exercisers than surveys have found in the population at large, but campaigners say there is no point undertaking a workout to compensate for alcohol consumption.
"Everyone knows that regularly taking part in physical activity is important for maintaining good health," the BBC quoted Public Health Minister Gillian Merron as saying.
"But the truth is, if you have a big night at the pub, you're not going to compensate with a workout the following day.
"Damage from regularly drinking too much can slowly creep up and you won't see it until it's too late," Merron added.
