Tulips from Kashmir set to flood national markets soon
From ANISrinagar, Dec 14: Tulips from Kashmir are all set to flood the national markets as the government is encouraging their commercial plantation with the hope of boosting the economy and generating employment for the youth.
A pilot project for this purpose has been started by the Floriculture Department in the Famous Tulip Gardens in Srinagar on an experimental basis.
Tulips grown here will be available in various markets across the country.
Ghulam Sarwar Naquash, director of Floriculture Department in Kashmir said that growing Tulips would be helpful in not only solving the problem of unemployment, but also boosting the state's economy.
"Floriculture Department is sending Tulips outside. This will help in solving the problem of unemployment in the valley. People are satisfied by the steps of the department which will greatly benefit the locals here," said Naquash.
Workers like Farooq Ahmad said that the work was in full swing in the Tulip fields for a bumper tulip crop this year.
"We are preparing the land to sow the bulbs. This year, we will be sending cut flowers from here to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and all over India as there is national market for Kashmiri Tulips," said Ahmad.
Tulip is synonymous with Holland, but did not originate there.
The Tulip, or "Laleh" as it's called in Persian, is a flower indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and other parts of Central Asia.
Tulips cannot be grown in the open in tropical climates, as they require cold winters. Manipulation of temperature can, however, allow growing Tulip's earlier than they normally would.
