Artist recreates masterpiece paintings with 106,000 tin cans

London, September 23: A photographic artist has recreated a unique version of Georges Seurat's 1884 pointilist masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Chris Jordan's work depicts 106,000 drinks cans, the number which is used in the US every thirty seconds.

Assembled from thousands of smaller photographs, the painting was recreated as part of Jordan's series titled 'Running The Numbers', which aims at shedding light on "the vast and bizarre measures" of American society by visualising statistics.

His other works include a forest of one hundred million toothpicks, equal to the number of trees cut down to make the paper needed for the junk mail sent in the US each year.

He has also created a sea of 426,000 mobile phones, the number of handsets thrown away in the country each day.

"My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books," the Telegraph quoted Jordan as saying on his website.

"Statistics can feel abstract and anaesthetising, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of the 3.6 million Sports Utility Vehicle sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 32,000 breast augmentation surgeries in the US every month," he said.
