Civil Society welcomes former ULFA cadres move to restore peace in Assam

From ANI

Guwahati, Aug 4: It is not just the common people who are supporting the efforts of the former ULFA cadres to bring about peace in Assam. Also, lending their voice for the cause are intellectuals in state.

Recently, scholars and peace activists held a meeting here supporting the ULFA cadres who had returned to the mainstream to bring peace and normalcy to the state.Assam Public Works, a non-governmental organization, which has been in the forefront advocating peace in Assam, came out in support of the cadres that left ULFA.

"Its very sorrow that certain ULFA leaders and the jailed leaders are pulling the peace process back. It's a very good time that 28th battalion of ULFA has came out among the people. They are saying that they want peace," said Abhijit Sharma, Director, Assam Peoples' Work.

It has been building opinion among people about need for peace and this seems to have put pressure on low rung cadres who are disenchanted with the militant organization for its acts of mindless violence. In their effort to restore normalcy, the former cadres of ULFA's 28th battalion have now become peacemakers and are establishing links with all sections of the civil society and opinion makers in the state.

Recently, they carried out a press conference explaining their cause to the social workers, intellectuals of the state.Hem Bhorali, a social worker said, "Public will support this type. It is very good symptom. It is to be continued."The leaders of the 28th battalion have realized that people are fed up with violence and are eagerly looking for the restoration of peace in the state. While on the other hand, the central committee of ULFA ignoring the need of the hour is continuing their arrogant behavior towards the former ULFA carders, calling them rebels. y Peter Alex Todd(ANI)
