'Dark Knight' holds off 'The Mummy'

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Batman beat the Mummy this weekend, holding on to the No. 1 ranking in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.

"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," starring Brendan Fraser and Jet Li, grossed $42.45 million in its debut weekend, but that still left it lagging behind "Dark Knight," which pulled in $43.8 million in its third week.

"Step Brothers" moved to No. 3 with $16.3 million in estimated ticket sales, followed by "Mamma Mia!" at $13.12 million and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" at $6.88 million.

Another new movie, "Swing Vote," a political comedy featuring Kevin Costner, came in at No. 6 with $6.3 million.

Rounding out the top tier were "Hancock," $5.2 million; "Wall-E," $4.75 million; "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," $3.43 million; and "Space Chimps," 2.84 million.

Falling out of the Top 10 were "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" and "Wanted."
