Supreme Court dismisses petition demanding judges's assets disclosure

From ANI

New Delhi, May 15: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition demanding disclosure of the assets possessed by judges, including the Chief Justice of India under the Right to Information Act.

The Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL)'s President, K G Kannabiran, filed the petition maintaining that the Chief Justice of India can't deny the information on the mere ground that the judges were Constitutional authorities.

A bench of Justices comprising Arijit Pasayat and P Sathasivam termed the public interest litigation as thoroughly misconceived.

Petitioner contended divulging such information would only ensure probity in public life and would enhance the image of the judiciary.

He stressed judicial independence does not give power to the judges to withhold information which may be required to be disclosed in public interest.
