Cate Blanchett Biography
Cate Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969 in Ivanhoe, which is a Melbourne, Australia. She is an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winning Australian actress and stage director. Of course, she has also won two SAGs and two BAFTAs, as well as the Volpi Cup at 64th Venice International Film Festival.
Ever since her father died from a heart attack when she was just 10-years-old, Blanchett drifted between being an extrovert and an introvert. While her younger brother has not shown any interest in the entertainment industry, her younger sister, Genevieve, works as a theatrical designer after having received
her Bachelor of Design in Architecture in April of 2008. As for Cate Blanchett, it was not until she actually began attending college at the Methodist Ladies' College that she explored her passion for acting. However, her major here was actually in both Economics and Fine Arts. Eventually she transferred to the University of Melbourne before leaving school altogether, at the age of 18, to travel overseas. While traveling in Egypt she was asked to be an extra in a movie. From there she then moved to Sydney, Australia where she studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1992. It was then that she began her theatrical career.
In 1998 Blanchett came to international attention when she played the role of Elizabeth I of England in the movie Elizabeth, which was directed by Shekhar Kapur. Other roles for which she is well-known for include the elf queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson's movie, The Lord of the Rings and she also played the role of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's movie, The Aviator. Currently she is working with her husband Andrew Upton. Both of them are artistic directors for the Sydney Theatre Company.
