I used to build houses, skyscrapers and try my hand (and fail) at recreating the Star Wars ships like the tie fighter or x-wing or the Star Trek Enterprise (a friend down the street did a super-sweet six foot high Enterprise, awesome!)
Then I recall the more advanced sets came out complete with gears and bands and rods that allowed you to put cars and other structures with moving parts.
