Okay, ever since the Adam and Eve thing, apples have never been a good symbol of morality. But apparently, the Apple that gave us the iPhone and many other interesting products is trying to be the bastion of purity for all of us.
What I’m speaking of is the ITMS App Store’s killing of the South Park App. This application promised to allow us iPhone users to stream any episode of South Park ever created directly to our iPhones. I assume iPhone version 1 users would have to use wi-fi.
In any case, I was very excited about this app. It would show studios and content creators alike that money can be made giving stuff away for free. It could have opened the way for a Hulu app, for example.
However, Apple killed the app stating that it might be offensive to some people. Well lah-dee-dah!
So let’s all go to the ITMS and see if “The Love Guru” is available for download. That movie is offensive on so many levels, not the least of which is the viewer’s intelligence. And if there’s a single American Pie movie available, well that’s offensive on the same levels that South Park generally is. And, correct me if I’m wrong, South Park episodes are available, unedited, for purchase in the ITMS.
The heart of the matter is that anything can be offensive to anyone at any time. Perhaps apps need a maturity rating? Or perhaps the South Park app could add a disclaimer to the app which states “don’t watch this if you have delicate sensibilities or are shorter than this tall”… similar to the beginning of every episode.
This is atrocious behavior on the part of Apple. They need to be consistent across the board. How can they let offensive movies be available and yet not allow an app that streams potentially-offensive shows? How can they disallow an app which shows content which has been on television and then allow a dozen different “fart” apps?
Come on, Apple… relieve your obvious rectal-cranial inversion and let the good apps through.
