The Nextel Unsupported Content Type Error

In my last post I was writing about email forwarding with hotmail. The reason I wanted to set up forwarding was primarily because in August my Nextel i730 stopped responding to hotmail and other MSN services in the browser. ADHEREL

Anytime I tried to access hotmail through my Nextel phone browser I would get an “Unsupported content type” error. Everything else, including Yahoo and Aol, was connecting, just not MSN.

Bummer!

I searched the net, tried some tips like master resets and rebooting but no luck. So after a few weeks I finally checked in with a Nextel rep who told me that indeed they were having  issues with Microsoft and not to worry, they’d have it fixed “soon”.

Well, so much for soon. Another 45 days went by and I still could not access hotmail on my Nextel, and that’s when I gave up and looked for an alternative to hotmail (like forwarding to Yahoo or Gmail).

But at that time, as fate would have it, my i730 began to structurally fall apart. The 730 had been a very durable phone but after years of treating it quite badly (lots of drops and nicks!), the phone was virtually unusable – the flip pivot mechanism had broken apart.

So I finally had no choice but to get a new phone, and instead of getting another i730 I upgraded to a later model, the Nextel i880.

The transition was seamless, i just swapped out my SIM card from my 730 into the 880 and everything worked fine. And guess what else worked? My hotmail and MSN! Just like that.

As it turns out the browser software on the older phones, the i730 in my case, simply couldn’t handle the hotmail site. But the newer phones can.

So if you are getting this error try upgrading your phone if you have one of the older Nextel Sprint models. I did and it solved my problem and it might work for you as well.
