If you have a few dozen sites or more in your “manage sites” or “files” pull down tab list in Dreamweaver, it can be a slow, often annoying process when locating the site you want in a hurry.
And unfortunately, in Dreamweaver 8 and earlier versions, there’s simply no way to organize a large list of sites into categories or folders for quicker, easier access. So if you have around 100 sites, you end up having to do a lot of scrolling and searching.
But there is a workaround. One way to make your life a little easier is to label/categorize your sites when naming them.
When you initially enter a site name in Dreamweaver, before the actual name you can add your own category label. For example, if you have a site about the band U2, you could name it “Band – U2”. And any future band related sites would be “Band – Sitename”. This way, since the site names are alphabetized by DW, all your band sites would be appear in one section within your files list.
If you often have just a handful of sites you are working on at any one time, you can temporarily edit their label by adding a number before the site name. For example, if you are working on a movie review site, you can change the name to “1 – movie review site” and again, thanks to the alphabetizing, the site will now show up on the top or near the top of the file list, making it far more accessible than being buried somewhere down below.
There are a few other ways to do the job, but at the moment there remains no official mod or plugin that’s been released. Hopefully, in the next version of DW Adobe will have such a feature.
