The What What? |

I want to spend some time talking about Windows Vista. Imagine, if you will, a company that produces a product that is touted to be so revolutionary, so new, that it should boggle the mind and everyone should desire the product. But then, the product emerges, and it’s a disappointment for most, but wonderful for some. The product crashes frequently, has many incompatibilities, and even more shortcomings. Experts and pundits cry out about the features that should have been included, but weren’t. But as time goes on, the product is revised and upgraded. Stability is added. Features are added. …

iPhone Woes and Oddball Fixes |

So, the iPhone 2.0 software upgrade has brought mixed feelings across the board… here are a few things that have happened to me. I have to rail on AT&T a bit. Sometimes, this stuff just doesn’t make sense. When they say more bars, sometimes I think they mean “more different signal levels per minute than any other cell carrier.” It started last year when I was traveling a lot. I was on a contract in Weehawken, NJ, which Google Maps will show you is right across the Hudson River …

Sometimes Popular is Better |

Despite what our mothers told us, sometimes being popular is better.
A good friend of mine and I have an ongoing rivalry about many geek things. We argue incessantly about things like Macs vs. PCs, what games are better, etc. I scored a major victory when I convinced him that a Macbook Pro was the best 15″ gaming laptop for a reasonable price. He actually bought one! Of course, he runs Windows on it exclusively, but still, I consider it a victory.
In any case, our largest …

iPhone 2.0 3G And Sometimes ‘Y’ |

Steve Jobs and company announced the new iPhone and related products at WWDC last Monday. So who’s on board? As many of you already know, I am pretty much Apple’s bitch. Steve says jump, I ask how high. But frequently, by the time I find out just how high I am supposed to leap, the Reality Distortion Field wears off and I balk. I am the proud non-owner of a Macbook Air, for instance. In any case, I poo-pooed the original iPhone at first, and then ran out and bought one the day after it’s debut. I have been largely happy with …

Can You Smell the Macbook Dairy Air? |

It is becoming very obvious to me that Apple is no longer interested in creating viable products, but instead are interested in creating proofs-of-concept for new ideas. Case in point: the Macbook Air. If any of you are like me, you are starting to get tired of Apple telling us the way we should be doing things. They are continually reducing the effectiveness and the feature-set of their products and telling us this is the way it should be, that we like to work with our hands in cuffs, and that we will pay dearly to do so. The Macbook Air …

A Kindled Flamewar |

Recently, Amazon announced the release of it’s electronic book reader, the Kindle, to mixed reviews. Here’s what I think about it. Reading books in electronic format is nothing new. eBooks have been around for several years now, as have dedicated electronic readers. Sony, within the past year or so, released their latest eReader, and has very recently updated it. The only thing new here is the use of eInk, which takes no power to display, so the battery last a very long time (thousands of page turns). Amazon’s kindle is very similar, but with some notable differences. Most notable, in my opinion, …

Gmail IMAP on the iPhone, Quirky but Awesome! |

Gmail IMAP on the iPhone, Quirky but Awesome! Finally! Gmail finally rolled IMAP out to my account. I have been a Gmail user since the first days of its inception, back when you needed an invitation and they weren’t so easy to come by. So why they decided to put me at the back of the line for the rollout is a mystery to me, but whatever. In any case, it’s here and it’s glorious! But it has some quirks. Mainly, there is only a loose paradigm connection between the “folders” ideology and Gmail’s labels. But I am confident that once I …

Everything But the Sync |

Rumor has it that everything Apple does and the way they do it is based on what Steve Jobs thinks is best. Well, it’s obvious that ol’ Stevie-boy only owns one Mac because it’s impossible to keep more than one in sync. I am convinced that there is a lot of money to be had for anyone who can come up with the solution to this problem. It is nearly as prevalent on the Windows platform as it is on the Mac, but I think the problem is worse on the Mac. And if anyone can help me with a solution …

The 10 (+2) Commandments of Geek Gadgetry |

Over the course of my geek life, I have collected and used many gadgets. Some have been good and some have been bad. To shed light on what makes a gadget good in the eyes of a geek, I give you “The 10 Commandments of Geek Gadgetry.” I. Thou shalt use a standard plug (preferably USB). I cannot tell you how convenient it is to have gadgets that use standard plugs for power and to interface with a PC or other piece of hardware. It just makes life so much better when something fails or if you have to, God forbid, …

iPhone + Hardcore Geek = Buyer’s Remorse? |

Okay, I broke down and got an iPhone, against my better judgement. But I played with it at the store and it was just so slick and fun to use, I couldn’t resist. But there are caveats, my friends! Well, my Windows Mobile phone ticked me off for the last time on Saturday. Add to that the fact that I live a mere 565 yards from the Apple Store, and the next thing you know, I have an iPhone. There are goods and there are bads. Here are my thoughts. iPod: Apple says this is the best iPod they’ve ever produced. Malarkey! …
