iPhone 2.0 3G And Sometimes ‘Y’
June 12th, 2008

Steve Jobs and company announced the new iPhone and related products at WWDC last Monday. So who’s on board?

As many of you already know, I am pretty much Apple’s bitch. Steve says jump, I ask how high. But frequently, by the time I find out just how high I am supposed to leap, the Reality Distortion Field wears off and I balk. I am the proud non-owner of a Macbook Air, for instance.

In any case, I poo-pooed the original iPhone at first, and then ran out and bought one the day after it’s debut. I have been largely happy with …

DRM Woes — I Told Ya So!
April 23rd, 2008

To those that said such things couldn’t or wouldn’t happen, here’s some back up of my point.

Not so long ago I posted a blog about DRM and its evils. To me, the biggest is that DRM’ed music isn’t purchased at all. It’s only rented. Eventually, any DRM scheme that depends on heading out to the interweb to authorize the user is doomed to eventual shutdown.

According to an Engadget article MSN is already shutting down its support for the MSN Music service. They even mention iTunes (as I did), even though it was a bit of …

AppleTV Redux Revisited Take 2 Another Time Around
April 21st, 2008

Apple has updated their AppleTV software and I feel this makes it a far more viable product to have.

I have been down on the AppleTV because it wasn’t a true DVR.  It still isn’t, as it can’t record video, but at the time it was little more than a media extender.  I never found much use for media extenders, unless they could be had ultra cheap.  But the new software, dubbed Take Two, makes the AppleTV a much better product, full of more useful features.

I have been using my AppleTV for several months now, and I bought it shortly before …

Can You Smell the Macbook Dairy Air?
February 5th, 2008

It is becoming very obvious to me that Apple is no longer interested in creating viable products, but instead are interested in creating proofs-of-concept for new ideas.  Case in point: the Macbook Air.

If any of you are like me, you are starting to get tired of Apple telling us the way we should be doing things.  They are continually reducing the effectiveness and the feature-set of their products and telling us this is the way it should be, that we like to work with our hands in cuffs, and that we will pay dearly to do so.  The Macbook Air …

Gmail IMAP on the iPhone, Quirky but Awesome!
November 1st, 2007

Gmail IMAP on the iPhone, Quirky but Awesome!

Finally!  Gmail finally rolled IMAP out to my account.  I have been a Gmail user since the first days of its inception, back when you needed an invitation and they weren’t so easy to come by.  So why they decided to put me at the back of the line for the rollout is a mystery to me, but whatever.

In any case, it’s here and it’s glorious!  But it has some quirks.  Mainly, there is only a loose paradigm connection between the “folders” ideology and Gmail’s labels.  But I am confident that once I …

Everything But the Sync
September 12th, 2007

Rumor has it that everything Apple does and the way they do it is based on what Steve Jobs thinks is best.  Well, it’s obvious that ol’ Stevie-boy only owns one Mac because it’s impossible to keep more than one in sync.

I am convinced that there is a lot of money to be had for anyone who can come up with the solution to this problem.  It is nearly as prevalent on the Windows platform as it is on the Mac, but I think the problem is worse on the Mac.  And if anyone can help me with a solution …

Gaming with Greater Mobility
September 10th, 2007

I got tired of lugging my 17″ HP behemoth across the country, and the perfromance was lacking.  So I went on a mission to find the best 15″ laptop for gaming out there for a reasonable price.  The answer may surprise you.

The HP DV9260US 17″ “Entertainment” Notebook sports a powerful Core 2 Duo CPU, clocking in at 2.0 GHz.  But its Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card was the bottleneck.  Company of Heroes runs acceptably with all graphics options turned down (hey, those soldiers aren’t casting shadows!!!  Ahhhhhh!  Demon soldiers!!!).  Shadowrun is more like ShadowWalk.  And Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter …

The 10 (+2) Commandments of Geek Gadgetry
July 19th, 2007

Over the course of my geek life, I have collected and used many gadgets.  Some have been good and some have been bad.  To shed light on what makes a gadget good in the eyes of a geek, I give you “The 10 Commandments of Geek Gadgetry.”

I. Thou shalt use a standard plug (preferably USB).  I cannot tell you how convenient it is to have gadgets that use standard plugs for power and to interface with a PC or other piece of hardware.  It just makes life so much better when something fails or if you have to, God forbid, …

iPhone + Hardcore Geek = Buyer’s Remorse?
July 2nd, 2007

Okay, I broke down and got an iPhone, against my better judgement.  But I played with it at the store and it was just so slick and fun to use, I couldn’t resist.  But there are caveats, my friends!

Well, my Windows Mobile phone ticked me off for the last time on Saturday.  Add to that the fact that I live a mere 565 yards from the Apple Store, and the next thing you know, I have an iPhone.  There are goods and there are bads.  Here are my thoughts.

iPod: Apple says this is the best iPod they’ve ever produced.  Malarkey!  …

Apple vs. Microsoft
June 20th, 2007

Why does everyone insist on comparing Apple to Microsoft?  In my opinion, there is no comparison.  It’s apples and oranges… er, apples and flags.

I am neither an Apple fanboy nor a Microsoft fanboy.  In fact, I think both companies have done wonderful things for us personal users of technology.  But to say that one is better than the other connotes a competition, a head-to-head, mano-a-mano situation that simply does not exist.  Let’s look at what I’m talking about.

First of all, the competition just isn’t there.  Apple creates products for Windows.  Microsoft creates products for Mac.  In fact, Microsoft is one …
