Geek Car

May 11th, 2007

by Michael Swanberg

I believe I have found my next car.  The Acura RDX!  And for all the geek reasons!

Right now, I have two cars: an Isuzu Rodeo Sport (affordable, but bad mileage) and a Honda S2000 (testosterone nirvana!).  Neither is blessed with an abundance of geek goodness.  Heck, the interior of the S2000 is very spartan.  Some S2000 afficionados even feel that the car is so purely a race car that it shouldn’t even have a radio!  But I digress.

As such, I have decided that my next automobile purchase will be based on geeky goodness.  That means all the creature comforts I can afford.  A good friend of mine put me onto the Acura RDX.  Nevermind that my friend doesn’t have a driver’s license, he knows his cars!  But he mentioned the RDX to me specifically as the car for geeky gadgety goodness.  Here’s what I’ve seen that I love so far.

Multi-Information Display: This tells you information like tire pressure, the phone number that’s calling or that is being called, miles per gallon, odometer, average speed, maintenance reminders, etc.

Paddle Shifters: ‘Nuff said.

HandsFree Link: I always wanted my in-car Bluetooth car adapter to work well without having the mute the radio.  Now it can.

Navigation System: Okay, I just bought a new GPS, but this one has voice activation!  “GPS!  Where is the nearest Starbucks?  Oh, right here?  Okay, where is the nearest bar, then?”  It also has restaurant reviews and real-time traffic.

Interface Dial: Basically a joystick on the center console to interface with all of the gadgetry!

Audio System: A 6-disc in-dash CD player that plays MP3s and WMAs (why no AAC?  After all, iPods are the ruler of this industry!), XM built-in, and aux input (ah, there’s the iPoddy goodness!  But too bad I can’t control my iPod from the dash… but that can be remedied ).

Climate Control: Dual-zone comfort!  And get this!  It uses the GPS and solar sensors to determine if the driver or the passenger are on the sunny side of the vehicle and adjusts the cabin temperature accordingly!  SWEET!

Sequential SportShift: That’s what the paddle shifters are for!  Yowza!

Center Console Storage: Which can fit a laptop!

Homelink: Replaces up to 3 remotes for garage doors and the like.

Power Moonroof: Self-explanatory.  Not as good as having the top down on the S2000, but it’ll do.

Remote Entry: No remote start, though .

All in all, this is the car every self-respecting geek (is there such a thing?) should want.  Sure, it’s an SUV basically.  But it’s practical (you can fit a lot of equipment in the back for LAN parties).  And for fun, that’s why I have the S2000.  But the RDX might be so much fun to drive that I may get rid of the S2000.

What am I saying?  The chicks dig the S2000!
