Virtual Nation
May 27th, 2009

Now there’s no excuse.  Honestly.  If you’re not using Virtual Machine technology, what’s holding you back? First there was VMware, a robust and commercial virtual machine manager, creator, executor.  Very nice.  Very expensive, but with a free version.  Then along came Microsoft’s free VirtualPC.  Easier to use and set up.  Somewhere in there came Parallels, Mac only (until later, …

AppTV
April 28th, 2009

Is there a more ripe platform for Apple to develop than the AppleTV? I am constantly on the lookout for PVR applications, hardware, etc. Apparently I am never satisfied.  My current setup is pretty good, but for some reason I just feel like I am missing something. Right now, I have an HP laptop recoding OTA high-def TV, …

Out of Control for “Flight Control”
April 27th, 2009

In case you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to, well, there’s work and there’s Flight Control. And I’m not sure which has commanded more of my time lately.  This one’s a real gem.  It’s only 99 cents but a bargain at twice the price.  Like with most good iPhone games, it’s easy to learn but difficult to …

iPhone 3.0: In-App Purchases
March 19th, 2009

What is the deal with the in-app purchases coming out for iPhone 3.0? I am not going to rehash what a hundred others out in cyberspace have already talked about at-length, so if you want a full-on review of the supposedly-100 new features in iPhone 3.0 (how does Apple count, anyway?), check out Gizmodo or Lifehacker.  Some very …

iPhone 3.OMG
March 16th, 2009

Okay, so if you’re paying attention, Apple is announcing the next major release of the iPhone OS tomorrow.  Everyone is on the bandwagon with predictions, wishlists, and leaks.  But one is oddly missing. Why on earth isn’t anyone desperate for wi-fi sync?  Everyone’s list has the standard most-wanteds, among which are copy-n-paste (which, come on, Apple should have …

iKindle… Do You?
March 10th, 2009

Okay, so a few weeks ago, I groused about the new Kindle a tad.  Like most people, my take is “me likey but me can’t affordy.”  Here’s the Geek Way of having your Kindle and eating it too. As with most things, this whole Kindle thing’s proof is in the pudding.  This article assumes you have need of …

My New Best Friend
March 10th, 2009

Let me tell you about my new best friend… HoeKey.  Yes, it has a funny name and it’s the epitome of no-frills, but it’s an extremely useful app.  Essentially it allows you to configure hot-key combinations to do lots of useful things, the most useful of which I have found is opening a command shell in the current …

Tweet This!
March 10th, 2009

Okay, could someone please explain to me the allure of Twitter?  I just don’t get it. I mean seriously.  Do we really need to know what other people are doing every single minute of the day?  Do we really want others knowing what we’re doing? Honestly… my Twitter activity would look like this: …

More News on the DRM Front
February 24th, 2009

Take this for what it is, but I have it on pretty good authority that Apple is working to make the “majority” of their media DRM-free… including movies and TV shows.

Yowza!

Forbiddin’ Fruit
February 18th, 2009

Okay, ever since the Adam and Eve thing, apples have never been a good symbol of morality.  But apparently, the Apple that gave us the iPhone and many other interesting products is trying to be the bastion of purity for all of us.

What I’m speaking of is the ITMS App Store’s killing of the South Park App.  This application …

Kindle Too?
February 17th, 2009

So unless you’ve been under a rock the last week or so, you’re aware that Amazon is releasing a new version of their Kindle ebook reader, cleverly monnikered the Kindle 2.  Is it worth it?

There are alternatives to the Kindle, obviously, and I’ll get into some of them a bit later.  And for geeks like us, well, I don’t …

The Nextel Unsupported Content Type Error
February 2nd, 2009

In my last post I was writing about email forwarding with hotmail. The reason I wanted to set up forwarding was primarily because in August my Nextel i730 stopped responding to hotmail and other MSN services in the browser.

Anytime I tried to access hotmail through my Nextel phone browser I would get an “Unsupported content type” error. Everything …

Email Forwarding with Hotmail
January 24th, 2009

I’ve had my hotmail account for years and years, and frankly while Gmail and other free online services may be better in terms of quality and usability, right now I’m married to Microsoft and hotmail.

But what if I wanted to forward from hotmail to gmail? Forget it. Unfortunately, with a free hotmail account you cannot forward your email to non-Microsoft …

iTunes, AppleTV, and the Path to Nirvana
January 20th, 2009

Apple has made some strides lately in getting us closer to what home media pervasion needs to be.  But they still have a little ways to go.

The evils of DRM are obvious and it is a great thing that Apple is dropping it from all of their audio tracks.  They still need to work on the videos, however, but it …

Dealing with Duplicate Content
January 17th, 2009

It seems that every month or so more and more webmasters are getting hit by Google’s attempt to sort out the issue of duplicate content. Duplicate content of course is content or blocks or content that appear across multiple sites.

And in Google’s mind, and rightfully so in most cases, why should they waste their resources (i.e., their money!) indexing …

Removing a Page from Google Index
January 10th, 2009

If you have a webpage that’s already indexed within the Google search listings but you want it removed ASAP for whatever reason (an old 301, personal/private info, etc) you fortunately have a few paths to follow.

First, add a “<meta name=”ROBOTS” content “NOINDEX”> in the header to the page in question. If the page is no longer active or deleted, …

Capacity for the Future
January 8th, 2009

A Texas company by the name of EEStor has patented a process for creating a super capacitor that may change our lives forever.

Yes, it’s true.  If you are interested in the details, I won’t bore you with them, since there is a very good Wikipedia article on the matter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EEStor).  However, I will tell you what I think …

Firefox Entry Box Memory
January 4th, 2009

One of many features I like about Firefox – and I’m sure this is available on other browsers so by no means is it exclusive – is it’s ability to remember what you previously entered into forms and search bars.

The feature, which you can enable by clicking Tools > Privacy > Remember Forms, is a real time saver if …

The Asus EEE 900: A Nice Little Surprise
December 31st, 2008

Good things really do come in small packages, and that small package when it comes to powerful portable computing is the ASUS EEE 900A laptop.

We picked one up for my mom, a complete newbie when it comes to computers (where’s the on switch), for X-mas and so far she’s had little trouble getting her bearings, i.e. surfing the web …

Minority Report is Here… But So What?
November 25th, 2008

I’m sure many of you have seen and heard the news about the latest breakthroughs in gesture-based computer input.  A company by the name of Oblong Industries, Inc., has created what they call "G-Speak" (http://oblong.com/).  Honestly, I can’t for the life of me understand the fervor. So if you go to the website and watch the demo, it’s …
