Scheduling Your Backup in Cron
February 4th, 2010

This is the follow-up to the previous article on backing up a Mac to a Windows Home Server machine. So now what’s the next step?  Obviously, we need to schedule our Automator jobs to run, unattended, so that we can stop thinking about backups and start thinking about what to do with all of our newfound free time. …

Back Up Your Mac to a Windows Home Server
February 2nd, 2010

Unfortunately, this isn’t a way to fully backup your Mac, but it’s a great and cheap (free!) way to backup all your Mac data. Okay, so this won’t allow you to recover OSX from a total meltdown.  But it will help.  And it is a great way to safeguard your data, as well as make it available to your …

iPad Frees Us All!!
January 28th, 2010

Well, there’s one great thing about Apple’s new iPad… I, for one, am no longer Apple’s bitch.  I watched the keynote and I firmly do not see myself getting an iPad.  I’m sure many of you feel the same way. I mean, I really just don’t see it.  Steve Jobs had said that Apple would never make a …

A Tablet Slated for Release?
January 27th, 2010

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine and I were having a conversation about what Apple could release as a tablet. Here’s what I was thinking at the time. This was before CES and the Lenovo U1, which I think is a first step in a great direction. I beleive this will lead us into an era …

Is PC Gaming Dead?
January 25th, 2010

Is the death of PC gaming on the horizon? Okay, I admit, I shamelessly worded that title to get you to read this.  I don’t believe PC gaming is dead.  But I certainly see how it could be, if a few things were put in place.  Please… read on. As I see it, there are a small handful …

WHS Woes
January 20th, 2010

Well, I think I got my WHS (Windows Home Server) box back up and running… for the most part. Does anyone out there have an unsuccessful Windows Home Server incarnation?  Seriously.  I read a good number of blogs by people who have their own WHS setup, so there’s plenty of company there.  But when there are issues, suddenly it …

The Holidays are Over!
January 19th, 2010

I’ve been pretty lax lately about updating this blog… well, the holidays are over and it’s back to work! Speaking of work, that’s been another obstacle of late too.  The company where I spend my days (my day job, essentially) has been throwing us all to the wolves on a regular basis, piling on more and more work.  And …

Does TLD Really Matter?
December 8th, 2009

Does having a specific top-level domain (TLD) have advantages over another? The short answer is no!

The myth has been out there forever on blog and forums that having a site or a backlink from a .edu or .gov outweighs the .com, .org and the rest. But there’s really no hard evidence to support that theory.

Web pages are ranked according to …

How to Use the Canonical Tag
December 1st, 2009

A new tag has come into play for webmasters this past year. The top search engines Google, Yahoo and Microsoft said back in February that their search engine spiders will acknowledge the “canonical” tag.

The tag which appears in the header of your webpage looks like:
<link rel=”canonical” href=”http://example.com/page.html”/>

But what the heck does it do?

Well it instructs the spiders to …

More OSes? Are You Crazy?
December 1st, 2009

Do we need more OSes?  Some feel that the domination of Windows is the biggest evil that is stagnating the PC industry.  But is the answer really more OSes? John Gruber wrote a few weeks back (sorry, I was on vacation, or I would have written on this earlier) that there is an OS Opportunity.  He argues that …

SEO Cloaking
November 24th, 2009

Search Engine cloaking is when you display one version of a webpage to the search engine spiders and another to the actual visitors.

The reason sites do this can be numerous, unfortunately many do it for nefarious purposes, and the search engines don’t like it.

On this topic, Google is pretty clear: “Cloaking refers to the practice of presenting different …

Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Folly, part 2
November 19th, 2009

Honestly, does anyone understand Microsoft’s point in offering upgrade media for Windows 7?  As well, what’s with the different versions? Last time, we discussed the multiple versions of Windows 7 and why it’s largely silly.  Now we’re going to discuss the even-sillier idea in all of this: upgrade versus full install. Seriously, why is Microsoft even going down …

How to Choose a Domain Name
November 17th, 2009

The first step in making a presence on the internet is often the most important, and that is choosing the right domain name to suit your needs.

For the most part, you will want a “.com” TLD (Top-Level Domain) unless you are redirecting flow from a “.org”, “.net” or other TLD to an existing .com.

If you don’t already have a …

Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Folly
November 17th, 2009

Honestly, does anyone understand Microsoft’s point in offering upgrade media for Windows 7?  As well, what’s with the different versions? I am trying to figure out why Microsoft would want to screw their customers so much.  I mean, what’s with all the different versions of Windows?  Windows 7 isn’t as bad as Vista, with all it’s myriad versions, but …

What is the Best Way to Get Backlinks?
November 10th, 2009

If you are a webmaster or site owner you know among the most important avenues to success on the internet for any website is its ability to acquire and maintain good backlinks. Sure there’s SEO and content, but if there’s no “votes” back to your site it’s going to suffer in the search rankings. That simple.

The question then becomes, …

eBooks Heat Up
November 9th, 2009

I’ve been playing with some of the eBook offerers more and more lately, and things are getting better.  But they’re still far from perfect. I’ve written some about ebook readers before, specifically the Kindle.  But the success of the Kindle has led others to get into the mix.  Right now, the forthcoming nook (yes, no capitals) from …

Push GMail Frustrations
October 27th, 2009

What is the deal with Push GMail?  Why can’t we delete emails? I am about this far (I’m holding my thumb and index finger less than an inch apart right now) from going back to IMAP for accessing my GMail via my iPhone.  Either that, or I’m going to just use the web app. No one was happier …

Google announced that is has reached an agreement with popular social site twitter to provide the search giant with real-time, live tweets relevant to user searches.

Free Wallpaper for Your iPhone
October 22nd, 2009

With a clever Google hint, it’s a piece of cake to get great wallpapers for your iPhone. Simply go to Google on your iPhone and search for “iPhone wallpaper imagesize:320×480”.  You can modify the search for your needs or desired theme, but the trick is the imagesize:320×480, which is the size of your iPhone’s screen.  Also make sure that …
