iPhone 2.0 3G And Sometimes ‘Y’ |
June 12th, 2008
Steve Jobs and company announced the new iPhone and related products at WWDC last Monday. So who’s on board? As many of you already know, I am pretty much Apple’s bitch. Steve says jump, I ask how high. But frequently, by the time I find out just how high I am supposed to leap, the Reality Distortion Field wears off and I balk. I am the proud non-owner of a Macbook Air, for instance. In any case, I poo-pooed the original iPhone at first, and then ran out and bought one the day after it’s debut. I have been largely happy with my iPhone ever since, but part of being a happy iPhone owner and user means realizing that, although what the …

Taming the Schedule, Part 2 |
June 9th, 2008
This is the second part in my series on getting more out of Windows Task Scheduler. Last time, we talked about setting up a Windows version of the *nix built-in script Periodic. Today we’re going to discuss setting up scheduled tasks in a manner that doesn’t make everything seem convoluted and obscured. When getting into scheduling things to run periodically, it’s easy to get lost in the details, scheduling each job individually. That can tend to make the job lose some of its identity. In essence, let’s say you want to run a backup weekly, and incremental backup daily at 9am and at 3pm, and a complete system backup monthly. If you have entries in your schedule that …

Taming the Schedule, Part 1 |
June 5th, 2008
Ever wished you could turn your computer into a machine that does all of your mind-numbingly boring tasks for you? Here are some tips on doing that. This will be a multi-part article on some things I have done to tame my Windows scheduler. I am not addressing Mac or *nix scheduling here, because those are much more robust systems for such things. The Windows Task Scheduler is pretty robust itself, but it can use some help. First of all, I wanted to get into an idea that’s common on *nix platforms, as well as on Macs. They seem to obscure their schedulers a bit, but set up basic needs and make it very easy to do most … Posted by Michael Swanberg @ 9:40 am in Programming | No Comments »

Summer Movies Continue: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade of the Raiders of the Kingdom of the Temple of the Doomed Crystal Skull Ark |
May 27th, 2008
The 4th installment of the Indiana Jones series has arrived, and the thralls rejoice! Is it all it’s been hyped up to be? Of course not. These days, movies that large are never able to live up to the hype. If there’s one thing we’ve all learned from a Grecian urn, it’s that the human mind can always conjur ideas that far surpass what human hands can actually produce. And that is sad. But then, no movie can be all things to all people. From the trailers, we can see that Indy is back… and he’s old. I had a grand fear that this movie was going to be one long joke at the expense of … Posted by Michael Swanberg @ 11:52 am in Movies | 6 Comments »

Good Ideas! |
May 15th, 2008
We all have good ideas. Why are so few of these ever brought to light? So, every now and then, an idea pops into my head. Occasionally, they’re good ideas. You know, ideas where you scratch your head and go, “hey, I’m not that smart, so if I thought of it, why hasn’t anyone else?” Here’s an example. You may recall I wrote an article about the iPod interface in my Acura and how horrible it is. It got me thinking. There is a fair bit of standardization in car stereos… size, for instance. There are several standard sizes of car stereos so that aftermarket head units can fit into the dashboard of pretty much …

Summer Movies: Iron Man |
May 15th, 2008
I saw “Iron Man” over the weekend and here’s what I thought. The Summer movie season is beginning and the first of the potential blockbusters I saw was “Iron Man.” Yet another in a long line of “borrowed” IP remade into a shameless attempt at scoring some fast cash. But it’s really good! Honestly. I really liked this movie. I admit, I never read the Iron Man comics when I was younger. I was more of a Superman kind of kid. But I was at least familiar with Iron Man. However, since I am not an expert, I really cannot comment on the accuracy of the movie or how well it upheld the original. But I … Posted by Michael Swanberg @ 9:19 am in Movies | 9 Comments »

Go See “Speed Racer,” Go! |
May 15th, 2008
The Summer movie season has begun in earnest. I saw “Speed Racer” last night and here is what I thought. Remakes are so risky. Especially in the common vein these days of remaking comic books or cartoons. In remaking them, you have to make a huge decision: do I make it like the original, or do I try to make a “realistic” movie based on the original? Either way, you’ll probably tick off half your potential audience. “Speed Racer” both succeeds and fails all at once. Okay, so let’s set the scene. I am rapidly approaching the point in my life where I have to put a “4″ at the beginning of my age. As … Posted by Michael Swanberg @ 8:29 am in Movies | No Comments »

Irresponsible Philosophy! |
May 14th, 2008
Can Pascal’s Wager be applied to the Global Climate Change debate? There’s a guy, apparently a science teacher, who has a series of videos out on the web where he tries to simplify the debate about Global Warming to a very rudimentary decision. Essentially, he purports, if we do nothing, then the possibility of global catastrophe exists. However, if we start immediate and widespread change against CO2 emissions, then the worst thing that could happen (complete economic ruin) isn’t that bad. Search YouTube for “manpollo” and you’ll see a list of this guy’s (I have no idea what his name is) videos on the subject. He’s bright, but I think he’s missed the boat on some things. Essentially, he sets … Posted by Michael Swanberg @ 1:03 pm in Opinion | 2 Comments »

Namecheap Coupon Codes |
May 1st, 2008
If you have read some of my prior posts you know I’m a big fan of registering your domains at Namecheap. Godaddy may have a lot TV presence (with Danica Patrick and Amanda Beard as their pitch women) but they also have a lot of garbage you have to wade through to finally checkout on their site, and Network Solutions, well don’t get me started. The place for my domains is Namecheap, and each month they offer a special coupon code for new domain registrations. And the May coupon code is MAYFLOWERS, which gets you nearly a buck off from $9.29 to $8.41 per new domain for one year. If you wish to register your domain for a period longer … Posted by Sunil Setty @ 11:21 am in Domain Registration | No Comments »

DRM Woes — I Told Ya So! |
April 23rd, 2008
To those that said such things couldn’t or wouldn’t happen, here’s some back up of my point. Not so long ago I posted a blog about DRM and its evils. To me, the biggest is that DRM’ed music isn’t purchased at all. It’s only rented. Eventually, any DRM scheme that depends on heading out to the interweb to authorize the user is doomed to eventual shutdown. According to an Engadget article MSN is already shutting down its support for the MSN Music service. They even mention iTunes (as I did), even though it was a bit of hyperbolistic fear-mongering. But it is true. If you purchase a record or a cassette tape or a CD …
